Flat roof insulation grants to save on energy bills

Slash your energy bills! Get a free boiler upgrade if yours was installed before 2005—government-funded, hassle-free!

You could claim £1000s in free grants to insulate your home and cut your energy bills with flat roof insulation. This guide explains what flat roof insulation is, the methods available, who can qualify for grants, and how Energy Saving Grants can help you through the application and installation process.

What flat roof insulation is

Flat roof insulation helps keep heat inside your home when you don’t have a loft or traditional roof space. A roof is classed as flat if it has a pitch of less than 10 degrees. Without insulation, these roofs lose large amounts of heat, which means higher bills and colder rooms.

Insulating a flat roof reduces heat loss and condensation. It also lowers heating costs. Current UK Building Regulations require a target U-value of 0.15 W/m²K for new flat roofs and new roofs on existing properties. Meeting this standard is often not possible without proper insulation.

There are two main installation methods: warm roof and cold roof insulation. The right choice depends on the building type and structure. Each method has its own benefits and is suited to different property needs. This leads directly into why more homeowners are installing insulation today.

    Why insulation makes a difference

Insulation directly affects how much heat your home keeps and how much you spend on energy. The table below shows the clear benefits of insulating your property compared to leaving it uninsulated.

    With insulationWithout insulation
Minimises heat loss from the homeAround 25% of heat lost through the roof
100% free insulation grant availableNo grant support, full cost burden on homeowner
Lower heating bills as less energy is wastedMuch higher heating bills due to wasted heat
Improved comfort with warmer, consistent indoor temperaturesCold spots and drafts make the home less comfortable
Reduced carbon footprint and environmental impactHigher carbon emissions from excess energy use
Options include cavity wall, loft, internal and external insulationNo protection against rising energy costs

    Types of flat roof insulation

There are two main ways to insulate a flat roof. Each method has different benefits and is suited to specific property types. Knowing the difference will help you choose the best option for your home.

    Warm flat roof insulation

Warm roof insulation places the insulating boards above the joists, topped with a vapour control layer. This reduces condensation inside the roof space and is considered the best choice for the UK climate. Rigid PIR boards are often used because they are durable and strong enough to walk on, making roof checks easy. This method is the most common for homes that need long-term, effective insulation.

    Cold flat roof insulation

Cold roof insulation fits between the joists with a waterproof layer on top. It is less energy efficient than the warm method, but it can work well for outbuildings or retrofit projects. Ventilation is needed to avoid damp and condensation build-up. Loft insulation rolls are normally used in this method, which is less common today but still has specific uses.

Many homeowners worry about the upfront cost of flat roof insulation, but it doesn’t have to be a financial burden. With government-backed energy grants, you could have the work done for free or at a greatly reduced cost.

    Grants for flat roof insulation

You may qualify for flat roof insulation grants through the government’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme. This programme is designed to make homes warmer and cheaper to run while reducing the UK’s carbon emissions. Energy suppliers such as British Gas, E.ON, Npower, Scottish Power, SSE, and EDF are responsible for funding the grants, making it easier for households to access energy-saving improvements without the heavy upfront costs.

ECO is the latest version of the scheme and has stricter rules around who can apply. Eligibility now focuses mainly on household income and on properties with poor Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings, specifically those in bands E, F, or G. This means support is directed at the homes that need it most, helping low-income families improve comfort while cutting energy bills.

Who can qualify for flat roof insulation grants?

Are you interested in finding out if you could get a grant for flat roof insulation? If someone in your household receives certain benefits, you may qualify through the ECO scheme. Even if you don’t claim benefits, you could still be eligible if your household income is below £31,000 a year. This gives you the chance to enjoy the benefits of insulation without paying the full cost yourself.

The benefits that may qualify you for a grant include:

    • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
    • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
    • Income Support (IS)
    • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
    • Working Tax Credit (WTC)
    • Child Tax Credit (CTC)
    • Universal Credit (UC)
    • Housing Benefit (eligible under ECO)
    • Pension Credit Savings Credit (eligible under ECO)

Even if you don’t meet the full criteria, you might still receive a part-funded grant to cover some of the cost. It’s always worth checking your eligibility here.
